43. St Patrick’s Day in Dunedin

Ben & Lucy’s
Sunday, March 17: A little rain overnight; overcast in the morning, then some rain in the afternoon

Was out of the house by about ten to stroll around town. A couple of people stopped me with requests for various directions and I did as best I could. Went right around Moray Place, then back along George St. Decided I wanted to look for “Boy the Movie”. Had a look at Whitcoull’s and their staff tracked down two copies in Christchurch & one in Nelson. Then tried a record store in the Golden Middle shopping centre, which is right out the front of my lodgings. They, too, gave me a pass.

Finally in the JB Hifi store after looking through their alphabetical section I tried one of the specials tables, not really expecting much. Spotted “Borat” (must have been fixated on the letter combination Bo) and then almost immediately several copies of “Boy” for $15, which is not bad. Pity I couldn’t find another two DVDs I wanted, because the third one would have been free.

Then to the supermarket for some sausage rolls for lunch. Back home Ben & Lucy had just gotten up and were having breakfast in the lounge. Heated up my rolls (they were quite big) and had them with tomato sauce, and an apple for dessert.

Computer seemed quite happy developing the pictures from Milford Day 4 on the new hard drive, so I set to work making the other SD card bootable. As soon as I had copied the latest versions of CHDK onto both partitions the camera booted fine and could find all the modules. Took a bad pixel photo and set DNG to 1.1. Then all I had to do was get the brackets from Milford Day 3 into a file. That will take some processing time. The laptop appears to have no software for the voice recorder so I couldn’t save Flynn’s interview onto it; but it is there.

Plenty of people all in shades of green and in various states of ebriety out on the rainy streets for Paddy’s Day. Tried to do some trip planning for the next few days. Rang around a couple of places in Oamaru but they were all booked out; got a single room in a place ¼ hour south; that will have to do for now. Then two days via airbnb in Timaru from where I can visit Otaio Gorge and/or Mt Cook if the weather improves again. Chatted with Ben & Lucy about New Zealand and Ben suggested “Once Were Warriors” as a film for my class.

Dinner was pork fried rice @ Wong Gok for $13, reasonable value for the restaurant. Had a shave and am now starting to pack for the road tomorrow.
