44. Dunedin—Waianakarua

Monday, March 18: Rain at first, becoming drier but still cloudy, cooler

Was up fairly early to get some breakfast and get my stuff packed up. For some reason PPP had packed in during the night, so the whole directory wasn’t completely developed. Waited around a bit for Ben, but only Lucy appeared, first for a shower and then for breakfast in their bedroom. Had all of my stuff in the car and when Lucy was ready to go, I left with her. 43. St Patrick’s Day in Dunedin

Sunday, March 17: A little rain overnight; overcast in the morning, then some rain in the afternoon

Was out of the house by about ten to stroll around town. A couple of people stopped me with requests for various directions and I did as best I could. Went right around Moray Place, then back along George St. Decided I wanted to look for “Boy the Movie”. Had a look at Whitcoull’s and their staff tracked down two copies in Christchurch & one in Nelson. Then tried a record store in the Golden Middle shopping centre, which is right out the front of my lodgings. They, too, gave me a pass. Continue reading

42. Otago Peninsula, South Dunedin

Saturday, March 16: Sunny and somewhat windy until the clouds appeared in late afternoon

This was a day for a latish start after all of the action yesterday, but I did want to drive down the Otago Peninsula & see if I could do some walks, but first there were a couple of computer matters to deal with.

Developing the pictures from Milford Day 1 virtually filled up the hard drive, so a solution had to be found to avoid gridlock. Looked around a bit and saw that Dick Smith had a 2 TB hard drive for $149 and that will have to do as a backup device for the moment. Tried for ages to get the other 32 GB card to become bootable for the SX 120, but if it were bootable at all it couldn’t find the necessary modules to load for grids, etc. Continue reading

Was up fairly early and had the rest of my crumpets with vegemite for breakfast. Ben & Lucy were still getting up when I left for Flynn’s office. I had judged the distance and time pretty closely and only had to enquire at the Psychology Department where his building was and was there on the way to finding his office when I bumped into him.

He had forgotten his wallet at a petrol station and left me in his office while he retrieved it. A few piles of paper on the floor suggested he was doing his tax return and in the meantime I checked that my equipment was working and ready to go. Continue reading

Go back! Wong Way, Te Anau

Everything repacked quite nicely and I was able to deal with breakfast fairly quickly and get down the road to take the photos that I wanted and to get to the library for the internet. Katie has a place for us tomorrow night (Dunedin Skeptics in the Pub), and Ilona was chattable. Continue reading

34. Te Anau

Steamers Beach
Friday, March 8: A few clouds at first, then sunny and warm apart from a cold wind

Today was the day for odds & ends. Found some washing powder, washed what I could and hung it up on the line to dry. In addition to my own seven washing pegs, I used another seven that I found on the clothesline. Think that a total of around twenty should suffice in future. Then washed the boots and put them up as well. Continue reading

Backside of the bottom in the deep south…

Up at 7:30 for breakfast with Tina & Courtney – muesli, toast (with vegemite) & coffee. Then Tina was off to work and I set about the task of packing all the heavy stuff into the case and some overnight stuff into the rucksack. Worked OK and was able to close the case by just after 9:00, so I could have slept in. Continue reading

Dunedin and Invercargill: Sunny and warm

Up at 6:00 to throw everything into the suitcase; Matt was up at half past and after loading L. still asleep into the children’s seat, we were off just after 7:00. I left the fire cans at Matt’s, who thinks he might improve on them by the next visit.

Fog was rolling into Hagley Park, and as there was not much traffic, everything was eerily quiet. We were in good time despite one false turn, and I had to wait around a bit before the bus decided to turn up. Continue reading

Weka dietary education: Milford Track

The second journey in the late summer of 2009 started with my arrival in Auckland on Sunday, February 1. After picking up a small camper, a Toyota Lucinda, which was named “Juicy Lucy”, I visited my school friend Tom and his family, then it was by way of Kawhia to New Plymouth where I made my first attempt at climbing Egmont. A couple of nights at the old motorcamp in Stratford to discover the Forgotten World and make a second – still unsuccessful – attempt at Egmont from the south and then on to Wanganui and Waikanae to visit Don and Sally Matheson who were giving me their holiday house for a couple of days in March. Kiwi I, 1974-75

Lee 1976

Author, ca. 1976

The first trip to New Zealand was my first trip overseas at all, and my first flight. In those days passports were not necessary for travelling across the ditch (even if it meant it was a little tricky getting through the international airport that Tullamarine surely already was). From Tuesday, December 10, 1974 to Friday, January 31, 1975, starting in Christchurch we completed an almost figure-of-eight of the two islands. Continue reading
